A neuropsychological assessment evaluates how the brain functions - its thinking, emotions, and behaviours. Assessment can be used for making a diagnosis and informing supports and strategies.
Assessment services, include:
-
Autism
A neurodevelopmental condition characterised by differences in language and communication, social interactions and emotional responses, sensory interests and perception. Autism assessments for children and adults are in accordance with the National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism in Australia.
-
ADHD
A neurodevelopmental condition characterised by inattention (e.g. poor focus, organisation, forgetfulness, not finishing activities) and/or; hyperactive/impulsive behaviours (e.g. fidgeting, inability to sit still, interrupting others, blurting out things). Neuropsychology assessment can diagnose ADHD in children and adults, and identify personal strengths and weaknesses to tailor intervention and strategies.
-
Learning Disorders
A neurodevelopmental condition that causes difficulties in acquiring and using academic skills like reading, writing, and math. Neuropsychology assessment can also identify other aspects of cognition, both strengths and weaknesses, to target with strategies.
-
Brain Injury
Recovery after a brain injury can be a long process. Neuropsychological assessment can be useful in tracking cognitive recovery after a brain injury, identify personal strengths and challenges, and help in adapting to life after injury.
-
Dementia / Ageing
There are many neurodegenerative conditions (e.g., Alzheimer’s Disease, Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia). Neuropsychological assessment can differentiate between normal ageing, mild cognitive decline, and a major neurocognitive disorder, and make recommendations accordingly.
-
Cognitive Rehabilitation
For individuals experiencing cognitive impairment or decline, a structured assessment allows development of an individualised treatment plan aimed at improving or preserving cognitive function, supporting daily living and independence, and slowing the rate of cognitive decline.
The Assessment Process
An assessment consists of many components and appointments, including:
-
After completing the online referral/enquiry form someone from the team will get in touch with you to discuss your specific needs, pricing, and book your appointments.
-
Psychometric questionnaires will be sent out to gather information for the assessment.
These will be reviewed prior to the Interview (½ hour)
-
This will be with the parents (if a child is being assessed) or the individual (if an adult). The interview involves a detailed history and discussing your concerns/reason for the assessment.
1 hour (2 hours for an autism assessment to allow completion of a structured clinical interview).
-
Neuropsychological testing with the child or individual (if adult). This involves a basic cognitive profile of strengths and weaknesses, plus targeted assessment depending on the referral.
3-5 hours depending on the referral question and complexity. Testing can be split across multiple appointments.
-
A comprehensive report is written, including diagnosis (if made) and recommendations.
4-5 hours depending on complexity and referral question.
-
Approximately 2-4 weeks after testing to allow time for the report to be written.
Results, diagnosis (if made), and recommendations are discussed and the report is released.
1 hour
Overall, an assessment may take 10-14 hours of service in total depending on the referral question and complexity. Please get in touch to arrange a quote.
